Move comes as retailer reports that 41% want help with car repairs

Halfords today announces the launch of its Mobile Expert, a new service that brings Halfords’ range of motoring services directly to busy motorists. The unit will offer 12 different services including battery replacement, wiper blade fitting and full oil changes.

Trialling in and around Shirley in the West Midlands from October 18th, it means motorists can book a selection of motoring services and fitting jobs online and have the Mobile Expert team arrive at their home or workplace in a matter of hours. The van will be equipped with the latest technology and equipment to tackle the jobs that motorists are unlikely to deal with themselves.

Karl Baker, responsible for the launch of the service said: “We’re really excited to take our motoring expertise to the road. Drivers have always been able to go to shops for these jobs, but this trial means we can bring our expertise directly to motorists. Imagine your battery going flat or your windscreen wipers stop working, well now you can book online and we’ll come to you. It makes waiting around in a shop or garage a thing of the past. We have launched this as a pilot, with the expectation of rolling it out more widely in 2019."

The new service will not only include fittings and but will also include other jobs like windscreen chip repairs, car bulb fittings and Adblue and screen wash top up. By the end of the year there are plans to launch roofbox and bike rack fittings too.

The news comes as a poll by Halfords reveals that 41 per cent of motorists don’t know anything about car repairs, preferring to get their problems fixed by a professional. The survey also found that only that 36 percent know how to change a headlight bulb, while only 33 per cent know how to change a car battery.

Karl Baker adds: “The trend for do-it-for-me is increasing as cars become a lot more technical and complicated. In recent years we’ve noticed a big change in mindset when it comes to DIY and small fixes which is why we’ve launched this trial.”

Halfords now offers over 30 expert motoring services in shops to make sure motorists are road-trip ready. From a correctly programmed sat nav, to fitting a roofbox, Halfords has the know-how and expertise for every adventure.
