Halfords survey reveals 43% of Brits heading off on a summer camping holiday

31 July 2017

School’s out, the weather forecast is typically British, and more of us are holidaying in the UK – with a massive 43% of families hitting the campsite this year, a survey of over 2,000 people by Halfords has found.

While we tend to plan and book our trips well in advance, the majority of us leave the preparation until the last minute. Almost half (44%) of those Halfords surveyed leave preparation for their trip to the week before they set off and nearly a third (30%) only check they have everything they need on the day before they leave.

Typically, 16% of Brits spend £81 to £100 on camping tech for their trip, and 34% want the latest gear before they pack up for their summer trip.

Halfords expects to sell a can of camping gas every 10 seconds. And every year, Halfords sells enough tents to comfortably sleep the whole city of Wolverhampton, but Brits tend to seek out the best spot for their camp on the site – 34% saying that disruptive neighbours would ruin their holiday.

When asked what kind of camper they were, 20% described themselves as old school campers – those who like to rough it and experience real camping, while 16% admitted to being reluctant campers, who camp to please more enthusiastic loved ones. And 25% admitted to arriving early when camping with friends and family to secure the best spot.

“As we enter peak week, we’re seeing some products move at lightning pace,” says Halfords’ camping expert David Hammond. “The smaller items like gas canisters for outdoor cooking and most practical products like tent pegs are popular with those who prepare last-minute – or even leave without them. The bigger items like tents and sleeping bags are easier to remember, but with our camping offer, we’re helping Britain’s campers enjoy their time on the campsite for less this year.”

This summer, whether you’re off for the school holidays with the family, heading to a festival or want to make the most of the good weather with an impromptu trip, save big with Halfords’ up to half price sale on staycations essentials.

Halfords also has a Staycation hub online, giving top tips for perfect packing, suggesting Britain’s best beauty spots to visit and advice on how to get ready for a hassle-free road trip.
