Halfords, the UK’s leading cycling retailer, is paying the VAT (calculated using the ex-VAT price) on selected high-visibility clothing and accessories until the end of December. With increasingly wet weather and colder, darker nights making visibility poorer on the roads for the UK’s cyclists and research revealing that safety is an increasingly important issue, this initiative couldn’t have come at a better time.
Research of more than 4,600 adults commissioned by Halfords shows that 31% of cyclists take safety seriously and would never leave home without a set of lights or high-vis equipment, while over 50% think more should be done by the UK Government and local council should do more to improve cycling safety.
High-vis wear such as armbands and jackets are currently liable for the full rate of VAT and Halfords is paying the VAT (calculated using the ex-VAT price). Halfords believes that high-vis clothing is essential in the winter months for cyclists, in keeping with The Highway Code rule: cyclists should “wear light-coloured or fluorescent clothing which helps other road users to see you in daylight and poor light.”
Katy Jackson, assistant buyer for cycling clothing and helmets for Halfords said: “The dark nights and autumnal weather shouldn’t stop you getting on your bike. By selling high-vis clothing at more affordable prices, we hope more people will carry on cycling and have the confidence to stay on the road.”
