-Brompton bikes to launch in Cycle Republic, Tredz and Halfords-

London, 16th October 2018: Halfords Group plc and Brompton Bicycle, the world-famous manufacturer of the iconic folding bike, today announces a long-term strategic partnership to continue to get the nation cycling.

London-based Brompton Bicycle want to change the way people live in cities; despite a significant uptake of cycling in our urban areas, cycling accounts for only 2% of all journeys made in London (modal share), compared with 37% in Copenhagen.*

Brompton bikes provide a unique ‘last mile’, scalable transport solution for tomorrow’s problems and by working with Halfords, it will provide a real opportunity to convert commuters and motorists, as well as those who’ve not ridden in years – to switch to pedal power in cities.

The partnership will also make Brompton bikes more accessible to employees of British businesses through the government tax free cycling schemes.

Brompton will launch across the Halfords group in 21 Cycle Republic stores, including via click and collect, and two Tredz stores in November, along with a dedicated Brompton mini-store within the popular Manchester Piccadilly branch of the Cycle Republic chain opening in December.

In April 2019, Brompton will also be available in select Halfords stores, establishing a firm presence across the country.

Will Butler-Adams, CEO of Brompton Bicycle, said: “We want to change the way people live in cities and we are making progress with over 500,000 Bromptons being ridden in cities across the world, but there is more we can do. We are teaming up with Halfords, Cycle Republic and Tredz to help us reach a wider audience, to engage and inspire them to get back on a bike and remember the delight and freedom of cycling. The Halfords Group have the scale and ambition, with our support, to mobilise modal shift in our cities; to encourage people out from under the ground, out from their cars and back on a bike to rediscover their city.”

Graham Stapleton, CEO of Halfords Group, said: “Partnering with an iconic British brand like Brompton seems a natural fit, given we share many of the same ambitions and values. More people are taking up cycling in cities, but we know more can, and should, be done if we are to reap the benefits that cycling can unlock. Using our scale and ambition we can help Brompton’s mission of changing the way people live in cities, break down those barriers and encourage more commuters to get pedalling.”

This partnership will make test riding and purchasing a Brompton easier to many, because of the nationwide locations of the Halfords Group. Cycle Republic has seen strong resonance with the urban cycling market and are currently seeing solid growth in city e-bikes sales, leading to new planned store openings.

Brompton bikes are sold in 47 countries around the world and over 75% of production is exported. The company believes there is huge cycling growth potential here in the UK and is passionate about investing in Britain.

Halfords is the UK’s leading retailer of cycling and motoring products and services with a 126 year history, operating with 452 Halfords shops and 24 Performance cycling stores.
