Includes handlebar unit and rear tail light triggered by app

Detects vehicles from 140 metres away

Research by Halfords reveals 11% of cyclists want better safety products

HALFORDS today announces a technological first with the launch of the first ever bike radar designed to detect other vehicles on the road.

The Garmin Varia Rearview Bike Radar is able to identify vehicles up to 140 metres away. The handlebar mounted unit indicates the speed and distance of up to 8 approaching vehicles via an array of LED lights, while a rear tail light unit lights brightens as vehicles approach to notify vehicles to the cyclist’s presence.

Jon Oliver at Halfords says: “Garmin’s Varia radar unit acts as a sixth sense and provides another option) to looking over your shoulder or using a bar end mirror on your bike.

“The dangers of rear approaching vehicles are really easy to underestimate. It’s not always possible to hear them approaching so the Garmin Varia Bike radar should bring more confidence to every ride.”

Recent research by Halfords into cycling safety undertaken by YouGov found that 11% of people would cycle more regularly if there were better cycling safety products, while 24% of those surveyed said that they’re too scared to cycle on UK roads. On safety precautions, 39% say they always take precautions while cycling on the road*.

The unit has a detection range of 140 metres and a maximum vehicle speed of 100mph. The battery lasts 4 hours in high power mode and the rear taillight has 40 lumens output. Both units weigh just 130 grams. It works independently and also seamlessly interacts with compatible Garmin Edge GPS computers. The tail light is available for purchase as an individual unit for those who already own compatible Garmin Edge GPS computers.

The Garmin Varia Bike Radar Bundle retails at Halfords.com for £239.99.
