Is your bottom a potato or a pear?
Halfords identifies the comfiest bike saddle for your bum
88 per cent say saddle comfort is the most important factor when choosing a bike
WITH the Tour de France at an end, entrants will no doubt be nursing plenty of saddle soreness. Indeed competitors used to combat soreness by riding with a steak inside their shorts, taking regular ice water baths and cutting holes in their lycra. Halfords’ recent research into cycling behaviour, undertaken by YouGov*, shows that 88% of people considered saddle comfort the most important factor when choosing a bike.
Dan Taylor, Halfords saddles expert says: “Saddle soreness can be a pain in the bottom and our recent research shows that comfort is the number one consideration when it comes to choosing a bike. We pride ourselves on providing saddles that fit no matter what shape or size you are – and if it means you don’t have to resort to unusual methods then all the better!”
“To help cyclists get the most from their ride we’ve identified five different saddle shapes – Boris Johnson is a plump tomato, while Chris Froome is an athletic potato.”
The Tomato is a plumper, rounder bottom that is quite squishy and conceals hidden bicycling prowess, typified by London Mayor Boris Johnson.
The Potato is wide, long and is suitable for those with a penchant for road bikes, exemplified by Tour de France champion Chris Froome.
The Pear is a saddle shape with a narrow waist and slightly wider base, sported by the likes of Daisy Lowe.
The Plum is a pert and athletic saddle shape and is a shape typically seen on the likes of actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
The Nectarine is an athletic shape sported by actress Gwyneth Paltrow.
Halfords has also launched one of the most comfortable saddles in the UK, the Selle Royal Freeway Fit saddle. Using Slow Fit Foam, it moulds to the rider's body and guarantees a uniform distribution of weight. Compared to the traditional foam padding, Slow Fit Foam reduces the hits and the vibrations in the points of contact, improving blood circulation, and the intelligent placement of the padding allows for reduced saddle weight.
Halfords offers one of the widest range of bike saddles in the UK- with 118 different models available online. It also offers a saddle fitting service in all stores for £5, meaning you can get on with enjoying your ride.
