HALFORDS today announces a technological first with the launch of the innovative Winglights– the smarter way to indicate and be seen when cycling. Winglights secured funding from Dragon’s Den investor Nick Jenkins on the BBC Show on Sunday 29th January.
Easy to install and use, the indicators flash bright amber and can be seen from all angles and at any time of the day. The Highway Code requires cyclists to indicate with a hand signal and Winglights will support and reinforce a cyclists change of direction.
Winglights, which cost from £26.99, are fitted to each end of a bike’s handlebars. They are activated by tapping the lights, and flash at the same frequency as a car’s indicators.
Halfords research into cycling safety undertaken by YouGov showed 11% of people would cycle more regularly if there were better cycling safety products, while 24% of those surveyed said that they’re too scared to cycle on UK roads. On safety precautions, 39% say they always take precautions while cycling on the road*.
Halfords’ Heather McCaffrey says; “Our customers told us that better safety products would encourage them to cycle more, and Winglights will make it easier for commuters to be seen on the roads.”
“We know visibility can be a major barrier to cycling at this time of year – we want to help commuters to overcome these barriers and to encourage as many people as possible to cycle.”
Nick Jenkins, Dragon’s Den investor and founder of Moonpig.com says: "As a regular cyclist in London I understand that any help communicating your intentions to other road users is a good thing and I don't want to hold my arm up at a junction for two minutes while I wait for the lights. Cycl have created a really well designed solution to this problem. You aren't allowed to ride a motorbike without indicators so I wouldn't be surprised if the same applies to bikes in the future."
Luca Amaduzzi, inventor of Winglights and CEO of CYCL says: “Riding a bicycle is about staying safe and being seen. That's why it's vital to signal when turning but the trouble is you need to take your hand off the handlebars and avoid the traffic at the same time. These are my solution. These are not intended as an alternative to a hand signal but will support and reinforce a cyclist’s change of direction.”
Available from Halfords.com from the 29th January, Magnetic Winglights RRP: £37.99 and Fixed Winglights RRP: £26.99.
